SCAT Exam Introduction
The School and College Ability Test (SCAT) is a multiple choice, standardized test administered by the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY). The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) is a gifted education program for school-age children.
It is an above-grade level test which assesses math and verbal reasoning abilities among gifted children. Above grade level test is one that assesses students at a higher grade level than the one they are in at the time the test is administered.
There are three levels of SCAT:
- Elementary Level SCAT - Students in grades 2-3 take the Elementary SCAT designed at grades 4-5 level.
- Intermediate Level SCAT - Students in grades 4-5 take the Elementary SCAT designed at grades 6-8 level.
- Advanced Level SCAT - Students in grades 6 and above take the Elementary SCAT designed at grades 9-12 level.

When is the test conducted? | You must first register with CTY to obtain an eligibility number before you can register to test at a Prometric test center. If you are a student in grades 2-8 and have already applied to the current academic year Talent Search, you are eligible to take the SCAT. To obtain your nine-digit eligibility number, which you will need to test at a Prometric center, log in to your MyCTY account. You may also call CTY at 410-735-6278 or email ctyinfo@jhu.edu (include child's name and address). Students may take the SCAT two times during any single academic year. |
What is the Format of the test? | All questions are multiple choice |
What is the medium of the test? | Computer based |
What are the Topics covered in the test? | above-grade level test which assesses math and verbal reasoning abilities among gifted children. It assess children at least 2 grades above their current grade. Math questions are Quantitative Comparison questions Verbal Reasoning questions involve Word Analogies Math questions are Quantitative Comparison questions |
How long is the test? | The two sections: Math and Verbal reasoning are each 22 minutes long separated by a 10 minutes break. There are 55 questions per section, 5 of which are experimental. |
